Planning An Organized Life |
||
| I've come to the conclusion that I am a perpetual organizer, forever planning | ||
| and plotting. I read books, watch how-to shows, cruise the internet and make | ||
| notes. I clip articles, find pictures, create files and set up binders. I used to | ||
| watch Martha Stewart, but realized there just aren't enough hours in the day | ||
| to be that perfect. | ||
| I organize and plan every aspect of my life, but never bring those plans into | ||
| action. They just linger in my mind or in the drawer or on the bookshelf. | ||
| Sometimes I look at the notes or the plans and think to myself, I should put | ||
| this into action. This is a good, well-organized plan. And back into the | ||
| drawer or on the bookshelf it goes until the next burst of energy. Some people | ||
| call it procrastination. Personally I think you can never be too organized. | ||
| I try to organize everything. Take exercise for example. I've read books | ||
| and magazines to determine what type of exercise would be best -- yoga, | ||
| pilates, aerobics or weights. I clipped pictures of exercises I liked, organized | ||
| them and pasted them onto cardboard to make a visual display. I gathered | ||
| the tools of the trade--weights, a skipping rope, stretch bands, and a notebook | ||
| to record my progress-- and placed them in a lovely basket. I found some | ||
| loose exercise gear. Then I cleared a spot in my office so everything was at | ||
| hand. I was prepared, organized and ready to go. And there the basket sits, | ||
| in the cupboard in my office, ready to go. It hasn't seen much action, but at | ||
| least it is organized. | ||
| I did the same with house cleaning. I made lists of jobs that needed to be done, | ||
| sorted them into daily, weekly and monthly chores, created charts on the | ||
| computer with columns to mark and date when each chore was completed and | ||
| to keep track of how organized I was. According to my charts I haven't cleaned | ||
| house in six months. | ||
| I have thick binders of writing I did over the years--journals, scribbles and | ||
| story ideas. There are some really good ideas in those pages. One day I will | ||
| plan some time to read through the binders, organize the ideas I want to use, | ||
| plot outlines for the articles generated by those ideas and get books to research | ||
| the articles. Then I better cruise the internet to find my markets. In the | ||
| meantime I need to revise my housekeeping charts because they are obviously | ||
| not working. And I better go through my exercise basket to see what I have | ||
| to add to make it more complete. Plan, plot and organize--I don't know when | ||
| I'll find the time to write. Or clean. Or exercise. Maybe I do need more than | ||
| twenty-four hours per day. | ||
