A Special Birthday |
||
| Once again Christmas was near. The little forest was bustling with excitement. | ||
| Many people came every winter to find a suitable tree for their homes. Every | ||
| winter they took trees of all kinds. They took fat ones and small ones, skinny | ||
| ones and tall ones. The trees that were chopped down were beautiful and | ||
| green--the kind that looked so grand with little lights. | ||
| But each year the people left one tree behind. In a dark corner of the forest | ||
| stood one tiny, brownish pine tree. His name was Rusty. Rusty was a very | ||
| special tree. He had sprung to life on the most beautiful day of the year-- | ||
| Christmas. For ninety-nine years Rusty had celebrated his birthday on the | ||
| birthday of Christ. For ninety-nine years he had been very lonely on Christmas. | ||
| Rusty often dreamt that he would be chopped down and brought into a home. | ||
| How dazzling he would look decked out with lights and tinsel. How happy the | ||
| children would be when they looked at him. Of course, Rusty knew his dream | ||
| could never come true. | ||
| Tomorrow would be Christmas. All over the world people would be celebrating | ||
| the birthday of Christ. No one would remember Rusty's. Rusty started weeping. | ||
| The cold air froze his teardrops. They became tiny icicles that clung to his | ||
| branches. Quietly Rusty dozed off and dreamt he was the grandest tree of all. | ||
| Meanwhile, snow fell softly. The large, fluffy crystals covered Rusty's bare | ||
| branches. While Rusty slept two delicate, white angels drifted down from | ||
| Heaven. They carried a large bag with thousands of tiny, silver stars that | ||
| twinkled in the moonlight. The little angels sprinkled the shiny stars all over | ||
| Rusty and on his head they placed the largest, shiniest star they could find. | ||
| Then, quietly as they had come, the angels left. | ||
| On Christmas morning Rusty was aroused by a noisy clattering that | ||
| surrounded him. Animals had gathered from afar and were staring at him | ||
| with amazement. Rusty was not used to being stared at. He felt nervous | ||
| and shy. Softly he asked a nearby deer why they were all looking at him. | ||
| Without answering the deer motioned to a large brown bear. The bear came | ||
| forward carrying a huge piece of ice. Unsuspectingly Rusty looked at his | ||
| reflection. He was startled. The early sun was reflected off the icicles. | ||
| The glitter and sparkle made him more beautiful than any man-made lights | ||
| or ornaments ever could. Suddenly all the animals shouted, "Happy | ||
| Birthday, Rusty." | ||
| Rusty's 100th birthday was the happiest he had ever celebrated. That | ||
| Christmas he made many friends. He also realized that Christmas could be | ||
| as happy in the forest as it was in the human world. | ||
